RTE's Music Changes Lives Programme

I just finished watching 'Music Changes Lives' on RTE 1 (http://www.rte.ie/tv/programmes/music_changes_lives.html) and I'm both elated for the children and schools but angry at the lack of imagination in the Department of Education and overall lack of provision for instrumental music education.

Great to see kids in Crumlin getting a chance to learn to play music, however, these one-off schemes are but a drop in the ocean. Privately funded music programmes such as the one featured serve as models of best practice for music education. However, until they are mainstreamed as part of an overall arts education policy, then will remain tokenistic and have little impact.

Here's hoping for positive change in arts education so that all children in this country regardless of background can experience instrumental music tuition at primary level.
